Many injuries and incidents are never publicized
\nand many deaths are misclassified as suicide.<\/strong><\/h6>\n

There are many stories about kids playing the “Choking Game” in groups at school, campgrounds, alone in their rooms… most of those stories end up with injuries, permanent brain damages or even worst, the death of the child. There are multiple cases where those tragedies are missclassified as suicides.<\/p>\n

Jesse, her 13-year-old son, had been strangled to death by the cord from his computer. He hadn\u2019t committed suicide, but this was no accident. Sharon said Jesse learned how to play the Choking Game at summer camp. Children at his school had been doing this for years, but on this particular day, Jesse was playing alone.<\/p>\n

My name is Garrett Pope, and I\u2019m the father of the 11 year old boy, Garrett Jr., who passed away tragically this past Wednesday. He was our oldest son, a 6th grade student at the middle school. Garret Jr. was funny, smart, and an amazing son to us and brother to his siblings.
\nMy family has never felt pain like this before, and we don\u2019t want anyone else to go through what we are going through.<\/p>\n

We do not know where Garrett learned this (The Choking Game), but the logical source would be from other kids in school, or in our neighborhood. Please talk about this with your kids, and do everything you can to prevent a similar tragedy. He was so young and impressionable, he didn\u2019t know what he was doing, and made a terrible mistake. A child in a New Jersey school has died as a result of the ‘choking game’. Bernards Township Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian said in a letter this week to parents that the student engaged in the game. His letter said the death was “one of the tragic losses of student life we have experienced this year.”

We just lost our 12 year old, and it was immediately obvious that he was trying the choking game. We had talked to him about it, months ago, when it was in the news. We didn\u2019t know it was on his radar and we certainly didn\u2019t think he\u2019d try it. His father, grandmother and little brother were right in the next room. We think he probably thought he\u2019d try this to find out what the fuss was about and then go have his after school snack and some TV before homework, and maybe, we don\u2019t really know, but maybe, in his mind, he might have thought this might give him a little prestige amongst his peers. He was only 12 and very happy. He had been diagnosed with Asperger’s when he was younger, but had asked us not to keep talking about it, because, he said, he was over it. We haven\u2019t thought for even a minute that this was suicide. My husband, Simon\u2019s dad found him and immediately recognized it as the choking game. His knees were near the floor and he was just leaning forward. This was just a kid who tried to do something incredibly stupid. We will never forget Simon, nor will we stop talking about him. We view his death as a horrible, stupid accident. Even though we had casually discussed this with him months ago, it didn\u2019t sink in. It isn\u2019t enough to tell parents about this or kids. You have to scare the crap out of your kids about this!<\/p>\n
